Poisonous House Plants

Some plants are beautiful and some are poisonous, some are even beautiful and poisonous. If you want poisonous house plants you better learn some things about them before putting them on the floor of your nursery. Although it was a joke for some it is actually serious business for some, not knowing that the plant actually was poisonous. Therefore will a list of common poisonous house plants follow, so you know which ones you should place on a high shelf.

Poisonous house plant – Aloe Vera

A more or less stemless plant originally found in northern Africa. While it is a nice plant that is relatively easy to care for that also purifies the air, it is a poisonous house plant. The poison consists of a latex within the plants juices. Of course this should not be consumed in any way, it is a violent laxative, but also should not be touched. Although some people won’t have a reaction, most people will experience an inflammation of the skin, or dermatitis as it is also known. Not very serious but still a poisonous house plant. Aloe Vera also has a number of health benefits if used in the correct way which is why it is common in among other things beauty products.

Poisonous house plant – Poinsettia

If you do not know this plant, you might know it under the name “Christmas star”. A sub-tropical plant known for its bright red colour and many people connect it with Christmas. Although proven not to be as extremely poisonous as first believed, this was only an urban legend, it is still a poisonous house plant. The leaves, sap and stem can induce dermatitis and continuous contact, and of course consumption, can lead to nausea and vomiting.

Poisonous house plant – Swiss Cheese Plant

A very common house plant that is perfectly suited to be grown in containers. Originally found in tropical rainforests on the American continent this poisonous house plant is only dangerous if leaves or fruit is ingested. Oxalic acid in these will cause irritation and painful blistering almost immediately. Swelling and a loss of voice might occur. Just keep your pets and kids away from this poisonous house plant and there will be no problem.

Poisonous house plants – Dieffenbachia

The dieffenbachia is commonly known as dumbcane or even “the king of plants” and is often found in peoples houses as exotic plant that is easy to care for. Its green leaves with light green centre make it almost majestic in presence. The leaves of this poisonous house plant contain raphides which are needle shaped crystals and it is these that make the plant potently dangerous. Chewing the plants leaves will result in swelling in the mouth and throat, which in its own right can cause suffocation and thereafter death.

Poisonous house plants – Mums

Mums are beautiful flowers that come in a wide variety of colours and work as an air purifier. Although not very dangerous for an ordinary man, it is considered an occupational hazard for those growing and working with them. Continuous contact with this rather common poisonous house plant will result in dermatitis
