Poisonous Plants For Dogs

As you already know, dogs more or less use their mouths as you and I would use our hands. Now if someone were to take care of you and tend to your needs, you would not want them to have acid on parts on the floor and either poison or toothpaste in the tubes in the bathroom. Well, the same goes for dogs. If you want to be a good friend to your dog, you will need to keep it clear from any poisonous dog plants out there. A short list of different poisonous dog plants will now follow.

Poisonous plants for dogs – Lantana

This is a beautiful plant is cultivated for its flowers but are in other places now neutralized for its invasive nature. As a poisonous dog plant you should pay close attention so your dog won’t get even near the plant. The leaves and berries, if chewed or ingested, are extremely poisonous and will give immediate effect on your dog. If lantana is present and your dog show signs of sluggishness, weakness and bloody diarrhea, take your dog to the veterinarian immediately. Or else your best friend might be gone within the next 4 days.

Poisonous plants for dogs – Jimson Weed

As this is a very common weed it is also of great danger for your dog. Although sometimes used as a poor substitute to illegal drugs this is a serious form of poisonous dog plants. As the whole plant is poisonous it doesn’t really matter which part your dog starts to chew on. Make your dog let it go and then rush off to the vet. This poisonous dog plant will result in convulsions, coma and death if not treated. Look for the symptoms of rapid breathing, twitching and restlessness.

Poisonous plant for dog – Dieffenbachia

This is a tropical plant also known as “the king of plants”. This is due to its royal presence with large spotted leaves, simple yet majestic. As a poisonous dog plant however, fatal. The leaves contain raphides which are needle-like crystals which get stuck in the mouth and throat of your dog causing massive pain and irritation. So much actually that it will cause the throat to swell and therefore risk suffocation and it might even result in death. Your dog might be fine but it is still recommendable to take it to the veterinarian because this poisonous dog plant also may inflict damage on the central nervous system.

Poisonous plant for dog – Hyacinth

As a poisonous dog plant it is not a major threat but due to the fact that it is such a common pot plant it is worth mentioning. The risk of your dog finding and eating one of these are much higher than anything else, if you have pot plants that is. It is a beautiful poisonous dog plant which all of it is toxic. If eaten or chewed on your dog will experience vomiting, diarrhea and pain. Hopefully this will teach your dog not to chew on the plants again. Now this is still nothing to be taken to lightly, the poison might still be deadly. At least consult your veterinarian when symptoms occur
