Poisonous Plants

Everybody in the whole wide world should know that there are poisonous plants out there, growing wild in the nature. Although most need to be eaten to be poisonous, some plants are actually poisonous by mere touch. Even some of our most common vegetables are poisonous plants which fruits are eatable. Here will a short list of plants come that might and might not surprise you. But do not be sceptical, they are poisonous indeed.

Poisonous plant – The common potato

Although the potato is considered a standard food product and a delicacy in most parts of the world it is actually a poisonous plant. The potato per say is not poisonous and you can continue to enjoy it, but the green parts of the plant contains a chemical known as solanine. The solanine is a perfect fungicide and pesticide making it a defence for the potato plant. Being also poisonous to humans the solanine is what makes the potato a poisonous plant. If consumed the symptoms will show as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, headaches and dizziness. In large quantities it can even be fatal, so do not eat the green parts of the potato.

Poisonous plant – Poison ivy

The poisonous ivy is most commonly found in North America and grows wild as either a climbing vine, a shrub or as groundcover. As a poisonous plant the vines produce an oil that, when in contact with, will cause a serious allergic reaction. This reaction shows itself in form of an extremely painful and disgusting rash. If this poisonous plant is consumed, or inhaled when burned, the result can be lethal due to the enormous allergic stress on the inner organs. If you ever need to come in contact with this poisonous plant, wear gloves and clothes that cover your entire body. When clearing plants by fire, stay out of the smoke and wear protective mouthpieces.

Poisonous plant – Foxglove

A very common plant in pots, gardens and parks, this has very beautiful flowers that more or less asks to be touched. Now just touching this plant is not a problem, it isn’t that kind of poisonous plant, the poison is actually used in many medical situations. The thing with this particular poisonous plant is that is contains a cardiac glycosides which lowers the rate of heartbeats, if you have a disease that is just fine, if you are healthy it could prove fatal. Never eat any plants that you aren’t sure of is safe. That will keep you out of a lot of trouble.

Poisonous plants – Castor oil plant

A plant widely grown and sometimes even cultivated for the castor oil which can be extracted from its seeds. Used in soaps, paints, pharmaceuticals and perfumes this poisonous plant is a valuable product with just one downside. The side product is ricin, a mighty powerful poison, that could kill and adult with just a small dosage. Therefore the seeds of these poisonous plants should never be consumed unprocessed, although ancient Chinese medical treatments would sometime recommend it in extremely small dosages.
